Dubare Elephant Camp, Coorg

Dubare Elephant CampDubbed as the Scotland of India, Coorg or Kodagu is a beautiful town about 250 km from Bangalore at an altitude of more than 1,500 meters above mean sea level. Misty hills, lush forest, sprawling tea and coffee plantation, orange groves, undulating streets and breathtaking views are what makes it an unforgettable holiday destination. In this series, we present to you places to visit in and near Coorg.
Dubare Elephant Camp MapFirst and foremost is the Elephant Camp at Dubare, on the banks of River Cauvery / Kaveri. This is a brainchild of Jungle Lodges and Resorts section of the Karnataka Forest Department to spread awareness about wildlife and an effort to prevent their extinction.
Presently our individual schedules are hectic and draw us away from nature as surely as ever. The last time we had seen an elephant from close quarters would perhaps date back to our childhoods, in the zoo or at a circus.
Come close to nature at Dubare Elephant Camp. At this resort, you can not only see elephants but feed them with bananas, coconuts and sugarcane. A naturalist shall accompany you to tell you about elephant history, ecology and biology.
Elephants - eatingAnd it is not about elephants alone. The moist deciduous forest is the habitat of a many wild animals and a plethora of birds. Herds of Sambar and spotted deer graze on the riverside and if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a crocodile enjoying his afternoon siesta, leopards and the gregarious wild dogs. The Indian Bison or Gaur and bears can also be seen here.
Dubare is home to a variety of birds like partridges, woodpeckers, kingfishers and many more. The pleasant chirping of birds and the humming of various insects make the place serene .You may also find peacocks proudly displaying their plumages. Flocks of birds fly across the twilight sky at sunset.
TouristsThere’s something for everyone here. Watch scrubbing and grooming of elephants, participate in feeding and of course, take a short elephant ride. The jungle safari in a jeep will show you around.
Go for some water sports if you want to become adventurous, else set out for some joy fishing. If you are oriented towards adventure, then come here during the monsoons (June- September) to enjoy river rafting in the Cauvery.  You should not miss a ride in the coracle boats, which have an interesting circular design.
And of course, explore the surroundings and savor the breathtaking views. Go for trekking and nature walks to discover the beauty this little town holds. Do not miss the sunset at Abbi waterfalls.
Dubare Elephant Camp - CottagesThere are fourteen cottages in the camp that mingle with the nature, yet extend all comfort to you. Taste the delectable array of authentic Coorg delicacies. North Indian cuisine is also available.
The dining area overlooks the Cauvery and is designed in the local architectural style known as ‘Ayn Mane’ or Coorg house.
